Pianista y compositor de
jazz estadounidense. Criado en Nueva York, trabajó como pianista estable de la Minton's Playhouse en dicha ciudad (1940–43), donde el vocabulario armónico creciente del
bebop se gestaba. Hizo presentaciones con Coleman Hawkins, Cootie Williams (
n. ¿1908?–m. 1985) y Dizzy Gillespie antes de comenzar a realizar grabaciones bajo su propio nombre en 1947. Su muy percusivo e idiosincrásico modo de tocar, hacía uso frecuente de disonancias agudas y ritmos insistentes inusuales en el jazz. Su composición más conocida, "Round Midnight, se ha convertido en un
standard del jazz.
